Tussen de bombardementen in Gaza, Libanon en Iran door vonden de Amerikaanse en de Israëlische regeringen deze week tijd om plannen door te drukken die het gezag op het al-Aqsa terrein over zouden dragen aan Israël.

De al-Aqsa moskee in Jeruzalem is de derde heilige plek van de islam en ligt in illegaal door Israël bezet Palestijns gebied. De religieuze autoriteit op de al-Aqsa is sinds de zevende eeuw islamitisch en de islamitische status van de al-Aqsa staat aan de basis van de religieuze status quo in Jeruzalem.

Israël doet aan levensgevaarlijke religieus-fundamentalistische politiek. Europa en Nederland antwoorden met symboolpolitiek. Als ze al maatregelen nemen, zijn die makkelijk te omzeilen. Het maakt dat een nog grotere wereldwijde geweldsexplosie steeds moeilijker te omzeilen is.

We hebben geen keuze. We blijven actievoeren.

Tijdens een Tweede Kamerdebat afgelopen april stelde Laurens Dassen (Volt) iets opmerkelijks aan de orde. Verbijsterd constateerde hij dat het toeristische verhuurplatform Booking.com over 2025 600 miljoen euro aan belastingvoordeel zou hebben gekregen.

Dat was voor The Rights Forum aanleiding om onderzoek te doen naar de kwestie. De resultaten daarvan werden deze week gepubliceerd. Wat blijkt? Het uiterst vermogende bedrijf heeft van 2019 tot en met 2025 ruim 2,8 miljard euro aan subsidie op zijn winstbelasting ontvangen. Sinds 2010 bedroeg die subsidie ruim 4,6 miljard euro.

Waarom deden wij dit onderzoek?
Booking is betrokken bij de illegale kolonisering van bezet Palestina, door de verhuur van accommodaties van Israëlische kolonisten in illegale nederzettingen te faciliteren. Hoe dat precies in zijn werk gaat is toegelicht in een eerder deze maand verschenen onderzoek door de Amerikaanse organisatie Ekō.

Onder internationaal recht geldt Israëls kolonisering als oorlogsmisdaad. In juli 2024 droeg het Internationaal Gerechtshof om handel, diensten en investeringen ten bate van Israëls illegale nederzettingen te verbieden. Met het faciliteren van de verhuur van accommodaties in de nederzettingen gaat Booking daar tegenin.

Booking verdient aan diefstal van Palestijns land
Directeur van The Rights Forum Gerard Jonkman zegt over de uitkomsten van het onderzoek:

'Booking verdient aan activiteiten op gestolen Palestijns land en wordt ervan beschuldigd die inkomsten via Nederland wit te wassen. In november 2023 dienden we daartegen een aanklacht in, die sindsdien wacht op behandeling. Om verdere vertraging te voorkomen, zijn we in april 2026 een Artikel 12-procedure gestart. Het is schokkend nu te ontdekken dat Booking in 2024 en 2025 nog ruim 1,2 miljard euro aan subsidie ontving.'

Kabinet wil handel in goederen met Israëlische nederzettingen verbieden

Verdere sancties zijn noodzakelijk én mogelijk, bleek deze week.

Het kabinet wil eindelijk de handel in goederen uit illegale Israëlische nederzettingen verbieden. Dat besluit komt niet uit de lucht vallen. Het is het resultaat van jarenlange druk vanuit de Nederlandse samenleving: van mensenrechtenorganisaties, juristen, activisten, kerken, vakbonden, academici en burgers die opeenvolgende kabinetten bleven wijzen op hun verplichtingen onder internationaal recht.

Niet genoeg
Het aangekondigde verbod is een goede eerste stap, maar bij lange na niet genoeg, schrijft Gerard Jonkman in een opiniestuk op onze website. Het verbod richt zich uitsluitend op goederen uit nederzettingen, en omvat vooralsnog geen maatregelen om ook investeringen en diensten met betrekking tot de illegale nederzettingen op de bezette Westoever te verbieden.

'Bedrijven kunnen daardoor blijven verdienen aan kolonisering en apartheid. Financiële instellingen kunnen blijven investeren in bedrijven die actief zijn in nederzettingen. Platforms als Booking.com en Airbnb kunnen blijven profiteren van toerisme in illegale kolonies. Pensioenfondsen en banken kunnen economische relaties onderhouden met ondernemingen die bijdragen aan de instandhouding van de bezetting.'

Deskundigen zien juridische mogelijkheden voor sancties tegen diensten en investeringen
Waar het kabinet volhoudt niet verder te kunnen gaan dan een verbod op handel in goederen met de Israëlische nederzettingen op de Westelijke Jordaanoever, zijn deskundigen het daar niet mee eens.

Dat bleek tijdens een rondetafelgesprek van de Vaste Kamercommissie voor Buitenlandse Zaken afgelopen woensdag, waar de aangeschoven experts heldere juridische kaders gaven waarmee Nederland behalve de handel in goederen, ook investeringen en diensten met betrekking tot de illegale nederzettingen op de bezette Westoever kan verbieden.

Eén van hen, Ramses Wessel, hoogleraar Europees Recht aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, was daarover duidelijk: '[Het aangekondigde handelsverbod] is een kleine stap in een hele set aan verplichtingen die het Internationaal Gerechtshof helder uiteen heeft gezet. We nemen dus aan dat er meer stappen volgen, en dat de pogingen om EU-brede stappen worden ondernomen, worden voortgezet.’

Reportage | ‘We eisen je huis op, je hebt een half uur om het te verlaten’

The Rights Forum berichtte onlangs over de bouw van 34 nieuwe illegale nederzettingen. Als gevolg van dat besluit zijn Fadi Lahlouh en zijn gezin in een dystopie beland: het Israëlische leger heeft de bovenste verdiepingen van hun huis betrokken. We spraken Fadi en maakten een reportage.

Hij had er vier jaar voor gespaard en het huis steen voor steen zelf gebouwd. Toen het bijna af was, trok Fadi Lahlouh in de zomer van 2023 met zijn gezin in zijn nieuwe woning in het dorp Arraba, zo’n tien kilometer ten zuidwesten van de stad Jenin op de Westelijke Jordaanoever. Zijn oudste zoon Mohammed en diens vrouw kwamen op de bovenste van de drie verdiepingen wonen.

Toen viel vorige week donderdagochtend het Israëlische bezettingsleger binnen. De militairen overhandigden Fadi een militair bevel: zijn gezin moest de woning binnen een half uur verlaten. Het huis werd opgeëist om een Israëlische militaire kazerne te worden. De grond waarop de woning stond, was door Israël tot militaire zone verklaard.

Interview | Voormalig Strafhof-aanklager: ‘ik voelde me niet beschermd door Nederland’

Voormalig hoofdaanklager Fatou Bensouda rapporteerde bedreigingen aan haar adres bij de Nederlandse overheid, maar maatregelen om haar of het Internationaal Strafhof te beschermen, bleven uit, zegt ze in gesprek met The Rights Forum.

‘Er waren allerlei bedreigingen, en er was intimidatie en druk. De boodschap was altijd: ‘stop het onderzoek’. Het begon met een ontmoeting met het hoofd van de [Israëlische veiligheidsdienst] Mossad. Het begon op een vriendelijke toon, hij wilde het onderzoek bespreken en duidelijk maken dat het niet nodig was een zaak te openen.

‘Maar later was er een incident waarbij ik en mijn familie direct door hem werden bedreigd. Bij weer een ander incident kreeg ik een envelop met geld aangeboden door onbekende mannen bij mij thuis. Ik begreep de boodschap: ze wilde laten zien dat ze wisten waar ik woonde.’

Across ports, cities, and communities around the world, workers, trade unionists, activists and allies are coming together to challenge the maritime supply chains enabling Israel’s genocide, apartheid and wars of aggression. Through direct action and public pressure, we are striving to end state and corporate complicity in Israel’s crimes against the peoples of Palestine, Lebanon, and the wider region.

#BlockTheBoat is a growing global campaign exerting public pressure to stop military and dual-use shipments - including energy shipments - that sustain Israel’s ongoing grave human rights violations. This campaign’s main asset is the people and movements across the globe, connecting solidarity with Palestinians to their struggles against militarization and austerity and for social, economic, racial and climate justice.

In the video below, activists from #BlockTheBoat campaign share their motivations, challenges and the world they are fighting for.

In the last few months alone, activists and dockworkers across more than 20 countries have helped to disrupt seven major military shipments, launched coordinated port actions across the Mediterranean and beyond, and pushed authorities to investigate shipments connected to Israel’s genocide.

In April, #BlockTheBoat organizers met to discuss their upcoming work and tactics aiming at disrupting the chain of complicity in Israel’s atrocity crimes.­

Breaking the silence

Beneath the cover of the ceasefires, the Middle East continues to burn. It remains unclear what will come of the negotiations with Iran or the rapidly deteriorating war in Lebanon. What is clear, however, is that in recent months, Israel has exploited the world’s diverted attention to advance far-reaching policies in the West Bank and Gaza. Here are some of the developments you should know about.

The West Bank: the banality of pogroms

Since October 2023, more than 5,375 settler terror attacks have been carried out in the West Bank. These attacks have involved the killing and injuring of Palestinians, as well as the theft of livestock and the destruction of crops, property, livelihoods, and harm to animals. Overall, no fewer than 64 Palestinians have been killed during these pogroms by either settlers or soldiers protecting the attackers. Against the backdrop of this unprecedented wave of terror, Israel approved the establishment of 34 settlements.

During the past three years, new settlements have been established at an unprecedented rate. Before the establishment of the current government in December 2023, there were 127 officially approved settlements, the current government has brought that number to 229. The number of outposts exceeds 360. Despite lacking formal recognition, settler outposts are protected by the IDF, sometimes receive state-provided infrastructure, and in many cases ultimately gain retroactive recognition.

Many of the new settlements, however, are not retroactively recognised outposts. They are set to be established following extensive planning, and their locations, as always, are not random. These settlements are planned in areas where their establishment would be significantly constrained without deeper state involvement: firing zones, parts of the northern West Bank where there has been no settlement presence before, and areas from which settlements were previously evacuated under the 2005 disengagement.

At least three settlements are expected to be established in “firing zones”. The IDF has used firing zones as a tool for land grabs for decades. For Palestinians, a firing zone means living under the constant threat of expulsion. Settlers who live in firing zones, however, don’t seem to bother the army.

Five settlements are planned in parts of the West Bank where no settlements previously existed. Their location between Palestinian villages is intended to further fragment the West Bank. As settlements pop up or expand, they also draw in a heavy military deployment, while new or larger “security buffer zones” appear. These zones are areas near settlements that Palestinians are barred from entering without the IDF’s permission. If the security buffer extends onto private Palestinian land, as it often does, Palestinians would be forced to navigate a complex bureaucratic system each time they seek access. Constant military deployment would also subject Palestinians to intensified repression: more checkpoints, more arrests, more home invasions at night, and more searches on the streets.

Additionally, as settlements expand, Palestinians living in their vicinity face an increased risk of becoming the next targets of ethnic cleansing by their new neighbours. Since October 2023, 59 Palestinian communities have been forcibly transfered, mostly by state-sponsored settler terrorists operating from nearby outposts. New settlements, together with settler violence backed by the IDF, are part of Israel’s broader policies of ethnic cleansing and creeping annexation in the West Bank.

The Gaza Strip: a ceasefire without ceasing fire

The IDF has moved the “Yellow Line” and now occupies 60% of the Gaza Strip’s territory, up from 53% in October, when the so-called ceasefire came into effect. This expansion has swallowed essential services, such as water points and healthcare sites, and, more importantly, has cost dozens of people their lives. The Yellow Line is a “kill zone” with extremely permissive rules of engagement. As one of our testifiers described it: “...anyone who enters it is sentenced to death [...] tons of civilians are killed [because] they [were] simply in the wrong place and the numbers don’t reflect that reality”. As we have already written, Trump’s plan does not include a clear mechanism or timeline ensuring the IDF’s withdrawal from the Strip in general, and from the Yellow Line in particular. These gaps create a dangerous situation, allowing the IDF to do what it knows best: establish facts on the ground. And indeed, the IDF has been entrenching its presence in the area. Satellite imagery shows that the IDF is implementing a large-scale engineering project on the Yellow Line, which includes at least 32 military outposts, a ground barrier, and infrastructure.

Apart from the expanding occupation, there are hardly any days when the IDF does not strike Gaza. Under the so-called “ceasefire”, more than 890 Palestinians have been killed and more than 2,680 injured. Demolitions continue on a massive scale as well, with thousands of buildings destroyed over the past eight months.

 Sde Teiman: Case Closed, Policy Intact

The IDF’s Chief Military Advocate dropped charges against five soldiers accused of torturing a Palestinian detainee. The soldiers were reinstated to active reserve duty.

Since October 2023, no fewer than 98 Palestinians have died in custody at Sde Teiman and other detention centres. The Sde Teiman case was one among a few investigated instances of torture in Israel’s detention facitlities, and despite video evidence and the detainee suffering severe injuries, including a punctured lung, broken ribs, and rectal damage, the case was ultimately closed. The soldiers’ reinstatement confirmed Israel’s ongoing commitment to a policy of torture. At Sde Teiman, there was probably no detainee who had not suffered at least some form of it. Virtually all detainees were subjected to sensory deprivation, starvation, and forced positioning. Here’s how one of our testifiers described it:

“Aside from security duty, we had to make sure they didn’t talk to each other, that they were sitting properly [...] They had to sit cross-legged and upright. They sit cross-legged all day, so sometimes, some of them would lean forward or back. They weren’t allowed [to do that]. Looking under the blindfold is also not allowed]. [If they try to] peek [under the blindfold], and if they break the rules, then we’re officially allowed to punish them.”

Torture has become deeply embedded in Israel’s prison system for Palestinians, so the soldiers’ reinstatement should come as no surprise. Over the past week, we all saw Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir proudly showcasing the abuse of detainees from the flotilla, while the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister rushed to insist that Ben-Gvir is not “the face of Israel.” However, these brutal practices are very much part of the reality Israel has built and maintained for years. And the first step toward changing that reality is acknowledging it.

HOW WE FIGHT IN GAZA

“The Perimeter:” our new collection of soldiers’ testimonies chronicles the systematic annihilation and expropriation of entire villages and agricultural zones - anything that lay in the newly created Gaza buffer zone, which the IDF “completed” last December.

Since Oct 2023, Israeli officials have been consistently saying that the 238,000 Palestinians who once lived in this zone will not be allowed to return. This collection details the ethnic cleansing of around 16% of the Gaza Strip.

At the time of writing, it seems the perimeter is being expanded further.

This Eid, We Remember Palestine, and Our Beloved Brother Salah Sarsour

As we welcome the blessed days of Eid al-Adha, we pray that this sacred occasion brings peace, joy, and blessings to you and your loved ones.

Eid is a time of worship, gratitude, family, and celebration—a beautiful sunnah of our beloved Prophet Mohammad ﷺ. It is a time to gather with those we love to strengthen the bonds of faith and community. Even in the face of hardship, our faith teaches us to embrace joy, uphold compassion, and remain steadfast in hope.

But as we celebrate this Eid, our hearts and minds remain deeply connected to our brothers and sisters in Gaza, Jerusalem, the West Bank, and across all of Palestine—families enduring unimaginable loss, displacement, violence, siege, imprisonment, and injustice. While many of us gather safely around our tables, millions of Palestinians continue to struggle for the most basic human rights, dignity, safety, and freedom.

We also remember during this Eid one of our beloved community leaders, Salah Sarsour, who remains separated from his loved ones while being unjustly held in ICE detention. As his family and community endure another sacred holiday without him, we renew our unwavering commitment to continue fighting for his unconditional release and safe return home. We will not allow his absence to be normalized, nor his voice and contributions to our community to be forgotten.

We remember the children spending Eid under bombardment and destruction. We remember the families separated by checkpoints, prisons, and walls. We remember the worshippers denied access to Masjid Al-Aqsa during sacred days. And we remember that our responsibility to them does not pause during moments of celebration.

Finally, we remember Amin Abdullah, Mansour Kaziha, and Nadir Awad, who were martyred last week at the Islamic Center of San Diego at the hands of Islamophobia. Three men who embodied what it truly means to live for one’s community, and ultimately give their lives in its service. Their courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to others will not be forgotten. Our hearts remain with their loved ones. May their memories be eternal.

This Eid, we renew not only our prayers for Palestine, but also our commitment to action.

At American Muslims for Palestine, we remain dedicated to educating, advocating, organizing, and mobilizing for justice and human rights for the Palestinian people. ery Eid in Palestine, Israeli occupation forces and colonial settlers attack worshippers, raid and desecrate mosques.
Just on the eve of commemorating 78 years of our ongoing Nakba, Israeli colonial settlers stormed the Old City of Jerusalem, harassing and threatening Palestinians in the infamous annual "Flag March", a parade that celebrates the 1967 occupation of Jerusalem. Almost every day now, colonial settlers invade Al-Aqsa Compound.

Mainstream news and social media noise immediately follow and the same harmful narrative resurfaces: “religious tensions,” “Muslim-Jewish clashes”, "disputed sites."

For over a century, Zionism has deliberately weaponised Judaism to shield colonial violence: from the call for a “national home for the Jewish people” to the 2018 Israeli Basic Law declaring that self-determination is "unique to the Jewish people."

Occupation, apartheid, and genocide are then reframed as a “complicated conflict,” while Palestinians, being bombed, displaced, starved, and killed are forced to defend themselves against accusations of antisemitism before they can even speak about their own oppression.

Every holy day reminds us that we keep challenging the persistent myth that we are in a “religious conflict”, reclaiming our agency and identity. We do so by:

    • Celebrating Palestinian diversity: Palestinians are not a homogenous Muslim group, but a diverse people with multiple identities, faiths and histories that must be free .

  • Centring the anti-colonial reality: Palestinians are resisting colonialism, apartheid, and occupation. If the oppressor was from any other religion, they would still resist it.

    • Delinking Judaism from Zionism: Criticising Zionism and Israeli violence is not antisemitism — and Palestinians should not carry the burden of constantly proving that distinction.

This Eid, reject the framing designed to make oppression sound inevitable.

Overview

The Occupied Palestinian Territory remains heavily fragmented; with people not allowed to move between the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, and movement within each of those areas further restricted by military divisions, physical barriers, and closed zones. Combined with ongoing violence, which keeps claiming civilian lives, these conditions are further deepening people’s humanitarian needs while making it both difficult and unsafe for them to access support.

This past week saw new waves of displacement before previous ones had even ended, as attacks and threats once again forced people from their homes or shelters.

For humanitarian partners, getting staff and the whole range of critical supplies to where they are needed remains extremely difficult.

When I refused military service, I was able to avoid serious punishment by obtaining an exemption through a psychologist’s recommendation. For me personally, refusing was relatively easy – many others who refuse pay a much heavier price.

And still, even with all those privileges, refusing in Israeli society means going against the current.

I still remember my official draft day very clearly. I had just finished the process of getting my exemption and was leaving the military base when suddenly a huge wave of 18-year-olds walked through the gates together for their first day of service. It really felt like swimming against the current. Everyone moving one direction, and me literally walking through this massive wave to leave the base.

Film played a huge role in my political awakening. Today I study film because of those early experiences, and it’s also why I work in media at RSN. I believe deeply in the power of images and storytelling. Film can expose things people are taught not to see. It can crack open the official narrative, while mediating experience  in innovative ways to speak truth to power.
 

Theory mattered, but it was only a starting point. The real shift happened when I started meeting Palestinians directly. Like most Jewish Israelis, even those of us from more liberal backgrounds, I grew up largely segregated from Palestinian life. Once I started joining dialogue groups, volunteering in the West Bank, and participating in joint organizing spaces, the occupation became personal in a completely different way.

I began understanding what it meant that my Palestinian friends from East Jerusalem had to think about whether it would be safe to speak Arabic in public, how they dressed, they considered how they dressed and calculated how they are perceived so as to not be victims of violence. It was shocking for me to realize that they could face serious consequences just for existing in the wrong place at the wrong time.

It was these personal experiences, amongst others that I share this place with, that I realized that I didn’t actually care very much about land in the abstract way nationalism teaches you to. What I cared about were people. I cared that people deserve dignity, autonomy, safety, and the ability to live without fear.

Support War Refusers

That’s still what drives me now. In my media work, in my artistic work, and in my everyday life.

To be honest, this can be very lonely work. Being a dissident in Israel often means isolation from every direction: from family, peers, difficulties finding work because of one’s activism and the list goes on. I’m still marked by my national identity, even though I’m trying to live beyond the logic of Jewish supremacy. And inside Israeli society itself, resistance can make you an outsider too.

But there isn’t really another option for me – we must struggle for dignity, autonomy, safety and freedom. We must keep moving forward.

The Rights Forum heeft deze week de aangifte tegen Tweede Kamerlid Gidi Markuszower ingediend bij de rechtbank in Den Haag. Ook hebben wij een klacht ingediend bij het Presidium (dagelijks bestuur) van de Tweede Kamer. Met deze stappen hopen wij Markuszower verantwoordelijk te houden voor zijn verwerpelijke uitspraken over het 'met maximaal geweld' tegenhouden van Palestijnse asielzoekersen zijn andere beledigende uitspraken over Palestijnen.

Markuszower deed zijn uitspraken in gesprek met Left Laser-journalist Bob Sneevliet. Op de vraag of hij met 'maximaal geweld' ook schietend geweld bedoelde, weigerde Markuszower afstand te nemen van die interpretatie. Zijn antwoord luidde: ‘Met geweld, ja.’

Deze uitspraken zijn niet alleen moreel verwerpelijk, maar zetten naar onze mening aan tot geweld tegen Palestijnen. Daarom zien wij geen andere optie dan aangifte te doen. Brief Palestijnse Nederlanders
Een groep Palestijnse Nederlanders heeft, in reactie op de uitspraken van Markuszower, een brief geschreven. Daarin roepen zij bestuurders, politici, journalisten, maatschappelijke instellingen en medeburgers op om ondubbelzinnig stelling te nemen tegen haatzaaien en geweldsretoriek gericht tegen Palestijnen.

'Afstand nemen alleen is niet voldoende, wij eisen actie. Het oproepen tot geweld, het aanzetten tot haat en het discrimineren van een specifieke bevolkingsgroep mogen in een democratische rechtsstaat niet zonder consequenties blijven, zeker niet wanneer dergelijke uitspraken afkomstig zijn van een volksvertegenwoordiger.'

Verslag | Een avond over de aanvallen op het Internationaal Strafhof

Gisteren organiseerde The Rights Forum in een uitverkochte zaal in Amare een indringende bijeenkomst over de toenemende bedreigingen, intimidatie, cyberaanvallen en sancties van Israël en de Verenigde Staten tegen het Internationaal Strafhof. Ook het Nederlandse optreden – of juist het gebrek daaraan – kwam uitgebreid aan bod. De centrale vraag van de avond was in hoeverre Nederland, als gastland van het Strafhof, tekortschiet in de bescherming van het Hof en daarmee van de internationale rechtsorde.

Sprekers waren Fatou Bensouda (voormalig aanklager van het Internationaal Strafhof), Ahmed Abofoul (juridisch adviseur bij Al Haq) en Suzanne Kröger (Tweede Kamerlid voor PRO). De avond werd deskundig gemodereerd door Giulia Pinzauti (universitair docent internationaal recht aan de Universiteit Leiden).

Verantwoordelijkheid lidstaten
Bensouda ging in op de concrete gevolgen die sancties hebben voor het functioneren en de onafhankelijkheid van het Strafhof en voor de internationale rechtsorde als geheel. Zij benadrukte dat het Strafhof essentieel is voor de handhaving van internationaal recht, maar kan het zich niet alleen verdedigen tegen politieke druk en intimidatie. Zij benadrukte dat de lidstaten van het Hof een verantwoordelijkheid hebben om het actief te beschermen wanneer pogingen worden gedaan het te verlammen.

Palestijnse organisaties
Abofoul sprak vervolgens over de impact van sancties op Palestijnse mensenrechtenorganisaties, waaronder Al-Haq. Deze organisaties spelen een cruciale rol in het verzamelen van bewijsmateriaal en het aanleveren van informatie aan het Strafhof. Hij wees daarbij nadrukkelijk op de verantwoordelijkheid van Nederland als gastland van het Strafhof en op het falen van de Nederlandse regering om daarin leiderschap te tonen. Wat er nu rondom het Strafhof gebeurt, stelde Abofoul, is niet alleen een test voor Palestina, maar voor de geloofwaardigheid van de internationale rechtsorde als geheel.

Actie blijft uit
Kröger ging in op de rol van de Nederlandse politiek en de moeilijkheid om in de huidige politieke verhoudingen meerderheden te organiseren voor moties die het ICC actief ondersteunen. Bovendien, zo benadrukte zij, blijkt telkens opnieuw dat aangenomen moties vervolgens ook daadwerkelijk uitgevoerd moeten worden – iets wat lang niet vanzelfsprekend is.

Ondanks de grote uitdagingen waren alle sprekers het eens over één punt: de strijd voor het Internationaal Strafhof en de bescherming van de internationale rechtsorde moet worden voortgezet. De avond vormde een sterke combinatie van academische analyse, juridische expertise, mensenrechtenactivisme en politieke reflectie.

Fatou Bensouda | Ondanks Israëlische ‘gangsterpraktijken’ gaf voormalig hoofdaanklager van het Strafhof slachtoffers een stem

Fatou Bensouda (65) werd in 1961 geboren in Gambia in West-Afrika. Als kind glipte ze al stiekem de rechtszaal binnen om processen te volgen. Later, als hoofdaanklager van het Internationaal Strafhof (2012-2021), begon ze een onderzoek naar Israëlische oorlogsmisdaden. Ze werd doelwit van een agressieve intimidatiecampagne.

Gastland | AIVD: extra inzet nodig om Strafhof en Gerechtshof te beschermen

Er is ‘extra inzet’ nodig van de Nederlandse veiligheidsdiensten om het Internationaal Strafhof en Gerechtshof ‘ongestoord’ hun werk te kunnen laten doen. Dat staat in het jaarverslag 2025 van de Algemene Inlichtingen- en Veiligheidsdienst (AIVD).

‘Ook op het Gazadossier’, voegt de AIVD daaraan toe. De internationale hoven worden genoemd in de sectie over welke effecten de ‘situatie in de Palestijnse gebieden’ heeft op de veiligheid van Nederland.

De AIVD erkent hiermee voor het eerst impliciet dat het Internationaal Strafhof en Gerechtshof in hun functioneren worden bedreigd, en dat méér moet worden gedaan om tegen deze bedreiging op te treden. Vanuit welke hoek die bedreiging komt, noemt de AIVD niet.

Nederlandse politici spraken harde woorden richting Israël, nadat de Israëlische minister van Veiligheid Itamar Ben-Gvir een video had gedeeld waarin hij toejuicht hoe de gevangen genomen activisten van het hulpkonvooi voor de Gazastrook worden vernederd en mishandeld.

Ze waren niet de enigen. Premier Giorgio Meloni van Italië was woedend en eiste excuses. Ook Frankrijk en andere Europese landen spraken zich uit over de ‘onacceptabele’ acties.

Het is zonder meer een opluchting om Nederlandse en andere Europese politici een keer zo fel over Israël te zien. Het kan dus wél. Maar één denkstap verder doet het vooral pijn.

'Wat moet er gebeuren met Palestijnen om een dergelijke uiting van verontwaardiging over Israël uit te lokken? Om ook maar een fractie van dergelijke solidariteit te ontvangen?'

New York Times-artikel over seksueel geweld tegen Palestijnen door Israël roept heftige reacties op

Het was geen nieuw verhaal dat de New York Times op 11 mei bracht onder de titel ‘The Silence That Meets the Rape of Palestinians’ (link zonder betaalmuur hier) door Nicholas Kristof, die al jaren verbonden is aan de krant. De stelselmatige verkrachting van Palestijnse mannen, vrouwen en kinderen in Israëlische gevangenissen is uitgebreid gedocumenteerd.

Het verhaal in de New York Times was om verschillende redenen anders. Alleen al het feit dat het in één van de invloedrijkste dagbladen ter wereld verscheen, zorgde voor ophef. Bovendien volgt de krant in haar berichtgeving over Israël en Palestina vaak het Israelische narratief. Dat blijkt ook weer uit het feit dat Kristofs artikel niet op de nieuws- of achtergrondpagina’s verscheen, maar in de opiniesectie. Dat terwijl aan de inhoud van het stuk stevig journalistiek onderzoek vooraf ging, en het feiten, en geen opinie betrof.

Sally Rooney brengt een boek uit in Israël. En dat is ok. De Ierse schrijfster is een voorvechtster voor BDS. Jarenlang hield ze Hebreeuwse uitgaven van haar werk tegen. Niet omdat ze iets tegen die taal heeft, maar omdat haar bleek dat de meeste uitgevers in Israël medeplichtig zijn aan illegale bezetting en apartheid.

In deze donkere dagen van genocide tegen de Palestijnse bevolking van Gaza is het klein nieuws. Maar dat Rooney toch een uitgever vond die voldoet aan de richtlijnen van BDS onderstreept hoe we ons keren tegen medeplichtigheid, niet tegen identiteit.

Luister naar Sally Rooney en stop de medeplichtigheid. Want ook deze week weer toonde Nederland medeplichtigheid.

Anti-Zionism is as old as Zionism. It runs through many Jewish histories — Sephardi, Mizrahi, Ashkenazi, and more — most of them deliberately buried.

One of those histories is the Jewish Labor Bund — a mass movement of socialist, secular, defiantly Jewish revolutionaries who rejected Zionism from the start. Most were murdered in the Holocaust, and the Zionist movement spent the decades after writing them out of the record. Molly Crabapple's New York Times bestselling new book, Here Where We Live Is Our Country: The Story of the Jewish Bund, has brought them back.

The Bundists believed in doikayt — "hereness." That liberation, dignity, and a beautiful Jewish life had to be built here, where we live, in solidarity with the people next to us and everywhere. Not at someone else's expense.

The Bund is one of the traditions JVP draws from — alongside the long anti-Zionist threads in Sephardi, Mizrahi, and other diasporic Jewish communities that the Zionist movement has worked just as hard to erase.

Two weeks ago, activists stood in front of the Israeli Medical Association, calling on Israeli doctors to honor their medical oaths. The message was simple: the Israeli medical system is not only silent, but complicit in the detention, torture and normalization of violence against Palestinain medical teams. 

Doctors from Gaza have been arrested and detained for years now without trial, with reports from major humanitarian groups attesting to the torture they continue to face. Dr. Husam Abu Safiya is the most well-known doctor being held in what have become known as Israeli torture camps. Dr. Abu Safiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, has been detained by Israeli forces since December 2024, under the "Unlawful Combatants Law" without charge or trial.

“Stop kidnapping medical teams from Gaza,” protesters demanded, “and torturing them in torture camps. Release Dr. Husam Abu Safiya from the torture camp in which he is kept.” The protesters highlighted what many of us already know: from approving brutal interrogation techniques to writing false medical reports, doctors in Israel have taken an active role in the torture of Palestinian prisoners.

While I was filming videos for our media channels , we were met with hecklers and attempts by police to shut down the demonstration. And while the protest was modest in size, we should all be paying attention. These smaller demos are part of a much larger movement and set of actors.

78 Years of Apartheid & Genocide

Today, May 15th, marks 78 years since the climax of Israel’s mass expulsion and ethnic cleansing campaign in Palestine, known as the Nakba. The Nakba was not a singular event, but the climax of a process of colonization that began in 1882. For decades, the destruction of Palestinian life and society has been known to the world, but it has been more acutely felt by Palestinians themselves, still yearning to drink from the well of justice while facing annihilation. Every weapon of war and tactic of extermination has been deployed against the Palestinian people, culminating in the Gaza genocide we are witnessing today.

Israel has entrenched its apartheid system through decades of criminal practices against the Palestinian people. From military rule in 1948 Palestine from 1948-1966, to a brutal military occupation of the remainder of historic Palestine (i.e., West Bank & Gaza Strip) since 1967, and the dispossession of 750,000 in 1948 and another 300,000 in 1967, Israel’s oppressive system knows no bounds. Between 1948 and 1967, and long after, Israel committed atrocities and massacres against the Palestinian both inside historic Palestine and beyond. Among these were the massacres of Deir Yassin and Tantura in 1948, Kafr Qasim and Khan Yunis in 1956; the Tel al Zaatar massacre in 1976; the Sabra and Shatila massacres in Lebanon in 1983; the Al-Aqsa massacre in 1990; the Ibrahimi Mosque massacre in Hebron (Al-Khalil) in 1994; the Jenin refugee camp massacre in 2002, and many others.

Israel’s ongoing campaign does not end in the Middle East.  Even in the United States itself, Palestinian activists and those who stand in solidarity with Palestinians are targeted. From Salah Sarsour, Mahmoud Khalil, Mohsen Mahdawi, Leqaa Kordia, Rumeysa Ozturk, Badar KhanSuri, and Ya’kub Vijandrew are but a few examples of Zionist repression— and of Palestinian steadfastness and resilience. However, as global popular sympathy for Palestine and the Palestinians grows— especially in the United States— Zionist repression and violence against the Palestinian people intensifies. Yet, Israeli brutality only strengthens Palestinians’ demand for their rights and drags Israel’s image deeper into the abyss of disgrace.

Palestinians insist on remaining. Remaining in their land, remaining in the world, and remaining as a thorn in the side of those who believe that the Palestinians can be destroyed once and for all. Palestinians inherit the trauma, stories, and consequences of the devastation leveled against their people from decades past. However, they refuse to accept any of it as a normal condition of being. It is precisely this refusal that angers those who are determined to erase Palestinians wherever they may be in the world. The Nakba–like the cluster bombs Israel uses–spreads its devastation through time and space. The initial munition is deadly on its own, but the smaller bomblets spread to a wider area. Some explode immediately on impact, while others remain unexploded only to kill later, long after the initial shock. This is meant, as we see today, to create a dark reality whereby Palestinian life is constantly devalued and diminished.

Ironically, the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (the Genocide Convention) was codified in international law in 1948 as the Nakba was underway. As the text of the Genocide Convention was being written, Zionist terror gangs recently formed into the Israel Defence Forces, committed at least two massacres in the first week of November 1948, killing dozens of Palestinians and forcibly displacing hundreds more from the villages of Arab al-Mawasi (Tiberias) and Majd Al-Kurum (Galilee). By the time the final text of the convention was adopted in December 1948, the nascent State of Israel had nearly completed the first phase of its ethnic cleansing campaign in Palestine. This was a clear sign that, as the world moved to identify, define, and prevent genocide, Israel was still sharpening its tools of genocidal machinery.

We write this statement, as Dr. Hatem Bazian states, not simply to remember, but to insist that “the right of return is a living demand, not a closed historical claim.” It is precisely this insistence on the rights of the Palestinian people that animates our work at American Muslims for Palestine, for it is this insistence that allows us to imagine the possibilities of the future and to continue despite the challenges we face.

For Palestinians, the Nakba has never been just history.

Today, May 15th, is Nakba Day. It is a day commemorating the ethnic cleansing Palestinians experienced upon the establishment of the State of Israel, and every day since.

For our grandparents’ generation, the Nakba meant the destruction of villages, massacres, forced displacement, and the theft of their homes and land in 1948. More than 750,000 Palestinians were expelled or forced to flee during Israel’s establishment, and hundreds of Palestinian villages were destroyed.

Seventy-eight years later, the Nakba has not ended.

For my generation, the generations that preceded me, and those to follow, the Nakba has continued, building off of the same structures of violence and dispossession, in new and disturbing forms.

Over the past years, we have watched the ongoing Nakba unfold in Gaza in real time. Entire families have been wiped out. Millions of Palestinians have been displaced, starved, besieged, and bombed. Hospitals, schools, refugee camps, and homes have been destroyed. All while the world debates whether Palestinian life is worthy of protection.

What we are witnessing in Gaza is not an event separate from the Nakba. It is the continuation of it.

This Nakba Day, we are urging supporters to take action in support of Rep. Rashida Tlaib’s resolution recognizing the Nakba and calling for an end to U.S. complicity in Israel’s violence against the Palestinian people.

This ongoing catastrophe is present everywhere Palestinians exist under Israeli control, violence, and influence.

We see it in Masafer Yatta and across the West Bank, where armed Israeli settlers, backed by Israeli soldiers, attack Palestinian communities and force families from their land. We see it when Palestinian Americans trying to visit their homeland are interrogated, humiliated, and denied entry at Israeli-controlled airports and crossing points. And we see it in New York City, where stolen Palestinian land is openly sold at real estate events while Palestinians remain denied the right to return home.

All Palestinians are connected to the Nakba because the structures that created it have yet to be dismantled. It is sustained by our tax dollars funding weapons to Israel, our elected officials providing political cover, the media’s normalization of Israel’s crimes and vilification of Palestinian resistance, and, critically, by the denial of the events of the Nakba in whole.

The resolution recognizes the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians during Israel’s establishment and the nearly eight decades since. It recognizes that the Nakba is not just a historical event, but an ongoing reality for Palestinians.

Official recognition matters because we cannot dismantle what we do not acknowledge. There can be no justice while the displacement, erasure, and murder of Palestinians is denied, normalized, and funded by the U.S. government.

Today marks the 78th anniversary of the Nakba, the forced expulsion of approximately 750,000 Indigenous Palestinians from their homes in 1948. On top of the ruins of our homeland, the Zionist movement established Israel as a settler colony, which has adopted apartheid and military occupation to achieve its declared goal: maximum land, minimum Palestinians.

Israel’s livestreamed genocide against 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza is the darkest chapter in this ongoing Nakba of oppression and ethnic cleansing.

Israel seeks to normalize and divert attention from its settler-colonial origins by overwhelming the world with tens of thousands of current crimes against Palestinians and the peoples of the region from Lebanon and Iran to Syria and Yemen.

Perpetrating unspeakable depraved violence, it aims to colonize our minds not only with despair but also with amnesia. But Palestinians, like our ancient olive trees, are resilient and patient; we also have a fertile collective memory.

Sustained, escalated, and principled BDS pressure is central to ending the Nakba and achieving the justice that Indigenous people of Palestine have been denied for 78 years.

The Rights Forum gaat aangifte doen tegen Gidi Markuszower naar aanleiding van zijn oproep om Palestijnse asielzoekers met 'maximaal geweld' tegen te houden. Op de vraag of hij daarmee ook schietend geweld bedoelde, weigerde Markuszower afstand te nemen van die interpretatie. Zijn antwoord luidde: 'Met geweld, ja.'

Deze uitspraken zijn niet alleen moreel verwerpelijk, maar zetten naar onze mening aan tot geweld tegen Palestijnen.

Verantwoordelijkheid
Dat dergelijke uitspraken worden gedaan door een lid van de Tweede Kamer, maakt de zaak des te ernstiger. Politici dragen een bijzondere verantwoordelijkheid om de rechtsstaat te beschermen en juist zij moeten geen geweld tegen kwetsbare groepen normaliseren of aanmoedigen. En al helemaal niet tegen mensen die op de vlucht zijn voor oorlog, onderdrukking en genocide, zoals Palestijnen.

In een tijd waarin spanningen rond vluchtelingen, migratie en Palestina oplopen, zijn woorden van publieke gezagsdragers niet vrijblijvend. Oproepen tot 'maximaal geweld' tegen Palestijnse vluchtelingen dragen bij aan ontmenselijking en scheppen een klimaat waarin daadwerkelijk geweld gelegitimeerd raakt.

Rode lijn
Voor The Rights Forum is dit een rode lijn. Het normaliseren van opruiende taal tegen Palestijnen mag niet onweersproken blijven, zeker niet wanneer die afkomstig is van een lid van de Tweede Kamer.

Vrijheid van meningsuiting is een fundamenteel recht, maar vormt geen vrijbrief voor het oproepen tot geweld of het aanwakkeren van haat tegen een bevolkingsgroep. In een democratische rechtsstaat horen dergelijke uitspraken door het Openbaar Ministerie beoordeeld en door de rechter bestraft te worden.

De Nakba herinnerd

Vandaag, 15 mei, is het Nakba-dag. Wereldwijd staan Palestijnen en anderen stil bij de Nakba van 1947-1948: de verdrijving van honderdduizenden Palestijnen en het verlies van hun huizen, land en gemeenschap. Ook vandaag werkt de herinnering aan de Nakba door in het leven van miljoenen Palestijnen.

Somoud Ghazal is 39 jaar geleden geboren in een vluchtelingenkamp in de Libanese hoofdstad Beiroet. Rond elke herdenking van de Nakba droomt ze over Palestina. ‘Wij zijn niet teruggekeerd, maar ook niet verdwenen,' schrijft ze op onze website.

'Elk jaar, wanneer de herdenking van de Nakba aanbreekt, voelt Palestina niet als een herinnering die wordt opgehaald, maar als een volledig leven van een voortdurende droom. Achtenzeventig jaar is geen getal in een geschiedenisboek, maar een optelsom van mensenlevens, uitgestelde levens en een geheugen dat niet slaapt.

'Mijn moeder leefde zevenenvijftig jaar in ballingschap. Ikzelf bracht negenendertig jaar door met het etiket "vluchtelinge", alsof het een familienaam was. En mijn dochter was nog geen negen jaar oud of zij erfde al het kamp, de angst en dezelfde vragen. Mijn grootmoeder droeg eenentachtig jaar lang de last van de diaspora en stierf in de overtuiging dat de weg naar Palestina korter was dan deze wereld.'

Interview | Israëlische documenten bevestigen de Palestijnse overlevering van slachtpartijen, moorden en etnische zuivering in 1948

Bevelen om hele dorpen met de grond gelijk te maken terwijl de Palestijnen zich soms nog in de huizen bevonden. Om álle inwoners van een gemeenschap te doden. Om hele gebieden etnisch te zuiveren. Met daaronder de handtekening van de desbetreffende Israëlische commandant. Zwart op wit.

De Israëlische historicus en onderzoeker Adam Raz kreeg twee jaar geleden dozen vol Israëlische officiële documenten uit de oorlog in 1948 onder ogen. Hij onderzocht de documenten samen met Akevot, een Israëlische organisatie die zich inzet voor het verzamelen, digitaliseren en openbaar maken van archiefdocumenten over de Israëlisch-Palestijnse kwestie.

Wat Raz in de gevonden documenten aantrof, had hij niet eerder gezien. Ook niet omdat Israël de archieven uit die tijd nog altijd gesloten houdt: het materiaal zou ‘het imago van het Israëlische leger kunnen schaden’. De historicus schreef een lang artikel over zijn bevindingen in de Israëlische krant Haaretz. The Rights Forum interviewde hem hierover.

Elf jaar ondermijning van het Internationaal Strafhof door Israël en de VS

Spionage, bedreiging, intimidatie, laster en sancties: Israël en de VS zetten zich al meer dan elf jaar in om het onderzoek van het Internationaal Strafhof naar Israëlische oorlogsmisdaden in Palestina te saboteren.

Om de escalatie daarin, met name sinds de start van de genocide in Gaza en het uitvaardigen van de arrestatiebevelen tegen Israëlische kopstukken, inzichtelijk te maken, publiceerden wij deze week een nieuw overzicht. In deze tijdlijn zijn de belangrijkste en meest serieuze stappen van de VS en Israël tegen het Strafhof opgenomen.

Normalisatie van Israël en normalisatie van haat tegen Palestijnen zijn twee kanten van dezelfde medaille.

Dezer dagen draait de Israëlische propagandamachine op volle toeren om het Israëlische optreden op het Eurovisie Songfestival te promoten.

Terwijl Israël zich in Wenen presenteert als beschaafd en westers, klinkt in Den Haag onverhuld wat dat werkelijk betekent. In de Tweede Kamer worden extreem racisme en geweld gepromoot. Kamerlid Gidi Markuszower pleitte voor het gebruik van ‘maximaal geweld’ tegen Palestijnse asielzoekers.

Een genocidale staat op het podium van wat een feest van Europese verbroedering zou moeten zijn. Genocidale taal in wat een bastion van democratische rechten zou moeten zijn.

Deze week herdenken we de Nakba. En blijven we strijden tegen normalisatie van wreedheden. Blijf boycotten.

Highlights

• Living conditions in Gaza remain dire, with most people displaced and exposed to continued health and environmental risks, while reports of attacks hitting residential areas continue.
• Over 43,000 people in Gaza have sustained life‑changing injuries, the World Health Organization estimates, while rehabilitation services remain overstretched.
• Only one in every two aid trucks from Egypt could offload at Israeli-controlled crossings along Gaza’s perimeter in the first 11 days of May, based on data tracked by the Logistics Cluster.
• Despite the constraints, humanitarian partners are helping people in Gaza restore bread production and strengthen early market recovery.
• In the West Bank, nearly 90 per cent of the 45 Palestinian-owned structures demolished between 5 and 11 May were used for agricultural, livelihood, water, or sanitation.
• The Jordan Valley has witnessed a spike in settler violence, with the monthly average of incidents causing casualties or property damage increasing 14-fold since 2020.

Overview

The humanitarian situation across the Occupied Palestinian Territory is marked by insecurity, ongoing attacks that endanger lives, and the progressive erosion or often destruction of critical infrastructure. Repeated and prolonged displacement, combined with severe movement restrictions, continues to disrupt daily life. Access to essential services remains limited, with health care, water and sanitation, education, and protection services all significantly affected. Many of those who have lost their homes and livelihoods have little opportunity to rebuild their lives, while the productive assets of others are under increasing strain. As a result, families are finding it difficult to meet their basic needs independently. Humanitarian partners continue to deliver assistance and, where possible, support the restoration of basic services and local coping capacity. However, constraints, shortages, widespread damage and – more generally –the lack of solutions that address the root causes of the crisis – continue to limit the reach, consistency and sustainability of this response.

The Nakba never ended: Israel’s continued assault on Al-Aqsa and Palestinian existence

Americans for Justice in Palestine Action (AJP Action) strongly condemns extremist Israeli minister Itamar Ben-Gvir’s latest provocation in the Old City of Jerusalem and at Al-Aqsa, alongside the Israeli government’s ongoing escalations. Ben-Gvir’s storming of the Al-Aqsa compound alongside extremist settler incursions and nationalist marches through Palestinian neighborhoods is a deliberate act of aggression meant to inflame tensions across occupied Palestine and throughout the region.

Today, Israeli authorities restricted Palestinian Muslim access around Al-Aqsa and the Old City while thousands of ultranationalist Israelis marched through occupied East Jerusalem under heavy police protection. Palestinian residents and shopkeepers were forced off the streets as marchers chanted racist slogans, including “Death to Arabs” and “May your villages burn.” At the same time, Ben-Gvir entered the Al-Aqsa compound and openly asserted Israeli control over one of the holiest sites in Islam.

As we commemorate 78 years of the Nakba tomorrow, these actions are yet another reminder that the Nakba is not merely a historical event confined to the past. It continues through the forced displacement of Palestinians, the seizure and expansion of Palestinian land, attacks on holy sites, the entrenchment of apartheid systems, and the constant attempt to erase Palestinian presence, identity, and belonging from Jerusalem and all of historic Palestine.

Al-Aqsa is the third-holiest site in Islam and one of the most enduring symbols of Palestinian heritage, identity, and existence. Repeated attacks on the sanctity of Al-Aqsa, combined with the humiliation and restriction of Palestinian worshippers, are part of a broader strategy to maintain domination through constant provocation, fear, and instability.

The United States must stop enabling this dangerous trajectory. A foreign policy that continues to provide unconditional military, diplomatic, and political support to the Israeli government while it attacks religious freedoms and escalates tensions at sacred sites is not contributing to peace or stability. It is fueling the very instability it claims to oppose.

We reject the normalization of these assaults on Palestinian life, worship, and dignity. We reject the idea that extremist violence and collective humiliation should be accepted as routine. And we call on people around the world to raise their voices against these escalating attacks on Palestinians, on Jerusalem, and on the sanctity of Al-Aqsa itself.

The Nakba and The World Order

What the ongoing colonial dispossession of our people says about the international liberal order then and now.

The Post–World War II Global Order: Built by and for Empire

For much of the Western world, the years following World War II are remembered as the birth of the United Nations, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the Nuremberg Trials. But for the Global Majority, 1945–1948 marked the continuation and restructuring of imperial domination.

As the post-war legal order was established, Western colonial powers drafted human rights frameworks while waging genocide, ethnic cleansing, and occupation across Palestine, Algeria, the Congo, India, and beyond.

The intention was clear: to build an international legal system that would preserve imperialism. The Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949 was designed to regulate colonial violence rather than end it. Meanwhile, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948), drafted mainly by European and North American intellectuals, centered individual rights while sidelining collective rights central to anti-colonial struggles: self-determination, sovereignty, liberation, land restitution, and economic justice.

Thus, the catastrophes of those years were not anomalies but a direct result of imperial impunity, silenced and distorted by the dominant historical narrative.

Humanity, justice, freedom, and equality are lofty and noble values, but they do not prevail on their own. They require pioneers who labor for them, voices that speak on their behalf, and advocates who defend them.

78 years later, the Nakba continues

This Friday, May 15th, marks 78 years since the Nakba (“day of catastrophe”) forever altered the fate of Palestinians, marking the beginning of Israel’s campaign of ethnic cleansing that forcibly displaced more than 750,000 Palestinians from their homes, separated families, destroyed entire villages, and denied Palestinians their internationally recognized right to return.

Decades later, Palestinians are still living through the violence, displacement and dispossesion that began with the Nakba. Since 1948, hundreds of thousands more Palestinians have been displaced across Gaza, the West Bank, and the diaspora; tens of thousands have been killed; and generations have endured mass imprisonment and detention under Israeli military occupation.

Today, Gaza is enduring a nearly three-year-long genocide. Families in the West Bank are being violently driven from their land by settlers and the Israeli occupation forces, while entire communities across the region continue to face bombardment, siege, forced displacement, and collective punishment. The Nakba was never confined to history; it has continued for generations, and Palestinians are still living through its consequences today. 

That’s why Rep. Rashida Tlaib is reintroducing a resolution recognizing the Nakba and calling attention to the United States’ role in enabling the continued dispossession of Palestinians.

For far too long, Palestinians have been expected to grieve quietly while our history is erased, denied, distorted, or treated as too controversial to acknowledge. We are living through a moment where the apartheid government and its allies are working relentlessly to manipulate reality itself by minimizing documented atrocities and attempting to suppress the lived experiences of Palestinians to protect political narratives. Recognizing the Nakba is about telling the truth. 

Congress cannot continue funding and defending policies that perpetuate displacement, apartheid, and mass killing while refusing even to acknowledge the history that led us here.

As you know, with so much rightful attention on Gaza, Israel has also been increasing its violent oppression of Palestinians in the West Bank. Read below for an update on our Rooting Resistance campaign and stories of West Bank farmers.

After working as an electrical technician for years, he suddenly faced unemployment due to ongoing closures and the changing political situation.

Qaher and his family struggled financially, but he refused to give up.

Today, I co-lead the Peace Partnership, which came as a direct reaction to the war in Gaza. It was formed in December 2023, at a time where the anti-war movement in Israeli was largely demobilized.

It was impossible to act publicly in dissent against the slaughter in Gaza. Before the Peace Partnership was formed, there was only one legal protest against the war. It was clear to us that no organization alone could act on its own against the brutality that was going on inside Israel. It was clear that we had to work together in order to have any ability to operate against the war from within.

In December 2023, the representatives of several dozen organizations met together and decided to form the peace partnership on the basis of agreement on core principles: an end to the war in Gaza, an exchange deal for hostages and prisoners and an end to racist and political repression of anti-war activists and Palestinians. We all started organizing together. There were always coalitions and coordinating bodies on the left in the past.

But what was unique about the Peace Partnership was that it was formed as a genuine Jewish-Palestinian partnership. In a society that is structurally asymmetrical and repressive towards the Palestinian community, forming this kind of partnership is not just a technical issue. It means a very profound commitment in principle and in practice for this kind of partnership that actually confronts structural asymmetry.

This is the Peace Partnership's strength, which allowed it in all of its organizing, to connect joint Jewish-Palestinian forms of resistance and mobilization, in ways that did not happen before. I come from a very radical left tradition. Since I was a teenager, I would go to Arab Palestinian communities and participate in political activities there. For the majority of Jewish leftists, because Israeli society is so segregated, it's not obvious to go protest in Umm al-Fahem, Nazareth or Sakhnin. Because of the Peace Partnership, we were able to bring Jewish and Palestinian activists together to resist the war, genocide and occupation. It would not have happened otherwise. I am one of the Partnership’s co-coordinators. As a Jewish-Palestinian partnership, I work alongside our Palestinian co-coordinator Sulafa Makhoul.

During the initial stages of the Israeli-American war on Iran, there was a widespread consensus of Israeli society that supported the war. Nationalism and militarism made it difficult for smaller groups to mobilize. That’s why the Peace Partnership was such a central actor that led resistance to the war from within. Each week, our demonstrations grew. Our first demonstrations were smaller, dispersed by the police within minutes. It was difficult to mobilize, but our demonstrations grew as more people joined, in parallel with growing resistance to the war. Soon we were thousands. And it’s because we are a coalition, we bring together the masses to break the glass ceiling of repression.

A big part of our work is to target wider society, not just stay in our ranks. Much of our demonstrations and educational efforts are targeted towards a big chunk of Jewish Israeli society that is not ideologically opposed to war and occupation, is inundated by militaristic rhetoric, and yet still opposes the current fascist regime of Netanyahu and his allies. We target this opening to expand our camp. Last month, we held a massive demo against settler terrorism, which much of the Israeli public has become open to hearing about. We partnered with organizations who oppose the current government who generally do not speak on the occupation, bringing them into our orbit in order to spread our message: that the occupation is the root. At the same time, many of our activities are aimed at the Palestinian Arab public as well, particularly backing them in opposition to the extreme repression we saw of Palestinian communities after October 7th.

Ultimately, we are not just opposed to war and genocide. Our partnership is committed to joint struggle and co-liberation in the face of a supremacist system. We organized the largest joint mobilizations the country has seen in years, breaking the wall of fear imposed by Israeli society. Our demonstrations against the war saw tens of thousands show up, both Jews and Palestinians, because they know we are building real bridges without the illusion of symmetry. We are writing to share a brief update from Hebron following a recent attack at Issa Amro’s house, which was captured on video and widely circulated over the past few days.

The incident is part of a broader pattern of harassment and violence facing Palestinians families in the H2 area of Hebron. These events are not isolated. They are part of daily life under increasing pressure.

We are also navigating shifting restrictions on movement, including changes to checkpoint access and hours, which further limit the ability of residents to move through the city, access services, and maintain daily life.

This Mother’s Day, we are thinking of Palestinian mothers who are carrying far more than any person should.

In Cairo, thousands of Palestinian families from Gaza are displaced, living in limbo as they navigate a new city with limited resources, uncertain futures, and loved ones still trapped back home.

At the center of so many of these families are mothers who are holding everything together while under the weight of separation, survival, and care.

At Network for Palestine, we work alongside these mothers every day, not as outsiders but as people who have also been displaced from Gaza and are living this reality ourselves. Our work comes from shared experience, from knowing what it means to rebuild while everything familiar feels out of reach. We provide rent support, food assistance, hygiene kits, medical pop-ups, and educational camps and training for their children. More than that, we are building a community of care that reminds these mothers they are not alone, even while so much of their lives remain uncertain.

Since we began, we have supported more than 32,000 displaced Palestinians in Cairo. Roughly one in every three has been a mother, with an estimated 8,000 to 10,000 mothers receiving direct mutual aid support through our work.

After multiple miscarriages and fleeing the genocide in Gaza alone with her three children, Fatma arrived in Cairo carrying unimaginable grief and fear for her husband and family still trapped back home. In the midst of this turmoil, she found herself in a lonely and exhausting fight to protect her children’s health, especially the vision of her sons. Ghaith, due to a hereditary condition, had been living in a world of shadows until we were able to step in and help facilitate the two surgeries that restored his sight.

Now, she is facing that same fear again for her eldest son, Omar, who is at risk of severe vision loss without treatment. Your Mother’s Day gift will allow us to continue standing by her side and help cover the ongoing medical care her children need. In a city with no safety net for refugees, your support is what makes it possible for her to keep going and keep fighting for her children’s future.

Volgende week staat in het teken van het herdenken van het begin van de Nakba in 1948, toen Israëlische troepen bijna een miljoen Palestijnen gewelddadig van hun land verdreven.

De Nakba duurt voort, iedere dag worden Palestijnen vermoord en van hun land beroofd. In Nederland zien we nog altijd institutionele steun voor zionistische agressie, zoals op de Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, waar haatdragende Israël-propagandisten deze week gewoon weer welkom waren.

BDS blijft nieuwe wegen van verzet zoeken. Morgen zijn we partner bij Actifest op het NDSM-terrein in Amsterdam. Actifest is een samenkomst waar op een collectieve en creatieve manier inspiratie gezocht wordt om verder te strijden voor mensenrechten en vrede. Hopelijk tot daar!

• Rapid response supported by the humanitarian community prevented loss of life near a solid waste dumpsite that caught fire in Gaza city.
• Rodents and insects continue to drive increases in skin infections and other health risks across Gaza.
• In the West Bank, the spread of foot-and-mouth disease is heightening humanitarian concerns for vulnerable Bedouin and herding communities.
• In just a week, 55 Palestinians were displaced in Area C and East Jerusalem due to administrative demolitions and recurrent settler attacks and intimidation.
• Amid ongoing movement restrictions and delays, the World Health Organization has documented 38 attacks on health care across the West Bank since January – affecting four health facilities and 33 ambulances.

Overview

Across the Occupied Palestinian Territory, people’s ability to stay safe, maintain livelihoods and access basic services is being steadily worn down. Violence, displacement, restrictions on access and movement and damage to essential infrastructure are deepening humanitarian needs. Relief partners continue to respond, but insecurity, access constraints, restrictions on key partners, and shortages of critical supplies are limiting the scale, timeliness and durability of assistance, leaving already vulnerable communities unprotected and with fewer ways to cope.

Gaza’s Siege & Blockade: The Creation of an “Open Air Prison”

American Muslims for Palestine (Chicago Chapter) presents the third of the special 5-week teach-in series titled “Understanding the Roots of Israeli Apartheid & its Present Regime,” live on Zoom where each session I will have a particular focus.

Join us tomorrow, May 6th @ 8:00 PM EST, for our 3rd episode titled Gaza’s Siege & Blockade: The Creation of an “Open Air Prison.”

The first two sessions provided a legal foundation of Apartheid, and its application in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. The series will delve into each domain of Palestinian life, with Gaza being the focal point of this session. Apartheid as a system applies to each domain of Palestinian life, but not necessarily in the same way, and to varying degrees of intensity. However, the overarching system of oppression has the goal of racial domination. Join us for this 3rd episode as it will contextualize Gaza’s history throughout the Nakba period.

Highlights

• Four months into 2026, just over 10 per cent of the funding required to provide critical humanitarian operations this year has been secured.
• In Gaza, two NGO workers were killed in separate incidents, triggering the suspension of health and water services.
• Restrictions on the entry of generators, engine oil, and spare parts are driving widespread system failures, reducing health and sanitation services, debris removal, and the movement of humanitarian teams.
• In the West Bank, 2026 has so far recorded the highest monthly average of people displaced due to lack-of-permit demolitions in over 17 years for which UN records are available.
• Israeli forces and settlers killed four Palestinians, including two children, between 21 and 27 April, and a Palestinian woman died of injuries sustained during an Israeli operation in 2023.
• Settler attacks on education are increasing pressure on rural families to leave their homes and communities.

Overview

Humanitarian conditions across the Occupied Palestinian Territory remain dire and often life-threatening, while humanitarian action continues to be constrained. Conditions affecting the operating environment range from import restrictions and impeded movement of UN agencies and NGOs into and within the territory, to strikes and other disruptions affecting service delivery. Within overcrowded displacement sites, women consistently report feeling unsafe due to inadequate lighting, which significantly increases gender-based violence risks, especially at night. Meanwhile, funding remains critically low, with less than 10 per cent of the required resources secured so far in 2026.

Warempel. Maatregelen tegen Israël werken. Europa was woest toen bleek dat een Russisch schip met gestolen graan uit Oekraïne op weg was naar Israël. Eensgezind dreigde de EU Israël met sancties en binnen no-time was de illegale graan-deal van de baan.

Voor de Palestijnse slachtoffers van de voortgaande genocide intussen steekt Europa geen vinger uit. Deze week viel Israël 22 schepen aan met voedsel en noodhulp voor de Palestijnse bevolking van Gaza.

Het is bizar, het is cynisch en het is onmenselijk. We blijven actie voeren. Tegelijkertijd is de vrijheid om af en toe dit alles te ontvluchten een groot goed en een groot privilege. Het privilege om een muziekfestival te bezoeken, bijvoorbeeld.

Vandaar dat we er dit seizoen extra scherp op zijn bij het boeken van festivaltickets genocide geen podium te geven. De grootste concertorganisator ter wereld is Live Nation Entertainment, een bedrijf dat doof en blind is voor Palestijns leed.

De Israëlische marine heeft in de nacht van 29 op 30 april meer dan twintig schepen van het hulpkonvooi voor de Gazastrook - de Global Sumud Flotilla - voor de kust van Griekenland aangevallen.

Israëlische oorlogsschepen en drones omsingelden de schepen rond negen uur ‘s avonds en hielden de bemanning onder schot. Vervolgens enterden militairen de schepen en sloegen de motoren en navigatieapparatuur kapot, zegt de organisatie.

‘Honderden burgers zitten vast op stuurloze, beschadigde schepen, recht in het pad van een naderende, zware storm. Bovendien is de communicatie met meerdere schepen verstoord, waardoor ze niet meer kunnen coördineren of om hulp kunnen seinen’, aldus de Global Sumud Flotilla.

Bemanning meegenomen
Het Israëlische ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken zei eerst dat het 175 activisten gevangen had genomen en hen mee zou nemen naar Israël. Inmiddels is bekend geworden dat alle activisten, op twee na, in Griekenland zijn vrijgelaten.

Onder de gevangenen waren vier Nederlanders, aldus Marieke Stam, woordvoerder van de Nederlandse delegatie aan boord van de flotilla. Zij bevestigde ook dat meerdere schepen met bemanning stuurloos ronddobberen op zee. ‘Mensen worden als misdadigers behandeld. Mensen die gewoon een bijdrage en hulp willen leveren.’

Geen Europese reactie
‘Dit is illegaal volgens het internationaal recht. Israël heeft geen jurisdictie in deze wateren,’ zegt een andere woordvoerder van de flotilla tegen nieuwszender Al Jazeera. ‘Het enteren van deze boten komt neer op illegale detentie – mogelijk ontvoering op volle zee’.

De entering van de schepen vond plaats op zo’n 80 kilometer van de Griekse kust. ‘Blijkbaar wordt dat toegestaan’, zegt Stam. Er is vooralsnog geen reactie van Griekenland of de Europese Unie gekomen.

Ook Nederland heeft nog niet gereageerd op het feit dat het Nederlandse burgers door Israël zijn gevangengenomen. ‘Laat je dit zomaar gebeuren met eigen burgers?’ vraagt Stam.

Op 4 mei herdenken we de slachtoffers van oorlog. Maar herdenken mag geen ritueel worden dat alleen naar het verleden kijkt. Daarom organiseert het Comité Waakzaamheid Nu opnieuw een inclusieve dodenherdenking in Den Haag, waar we stilstaan bij alle slachtoffers van oorlogsgeweld – toen én nu.

In een tijd waarin oorlog terugkeert in Europa, de internationale rechtsorde onder druk staat en wereldwijd burgers slachtoffer worden van geweld, is het belangrijk om het jaarlijks ritueel van herdenken te verbreden. Herdenken betekent niet alleen terugkijken, maar ook verantwoordelijkheid nemen voor het heden.

Lidstaten van het Strafhof laten na maatregelen te nemen om het hof te beschermen tegen sancties en schaden daarmee de internationale rechtsorde.

Dat zijn twee belangrijke conclusies in een vorige week uitgebracht rapport van de Coalitie voor het Internationaal Strafhof (CICC), een internationaal netwerk van meer dan 2500 maatschappelijke organisaties. De CICC nam interviews af met in totaal 45 medewerkers van het Strafhof, mensenrechtenverdedigers en onafhankelijke experts.

Roofdieren en lafaards
Het rapport werd donderdag gepresenteerd tijdens een bijeenkomst in Den Haag, waar Strafhofrechters, Francesca Albanese en Palestijnse mensenrechtenorganisaties inzicht gaven in wat het effect van de sancties is op hun leven.

Agnes Callamard, secretaris-generaal van Amnesty International, sprak bij de presentatie over een ‘tijdperk van roofdieren en lafaards’. De roofdieren: leiders zoals Trump, Netanyahu en Poetin die nietsontziend dominantie nastreven en een spoor van vernietiging achterlaten.

De lafaards: landen die toekijken en het laten gebeuren zonder tegenwicht te bieden. ‘Roofdieren en pestkoppen moet je op hun plaats zetten, niet paaien’, zei Callamard. ‘In plaats van de confrontatie te zoeken met deze roofdieren, hebben de meeste regeringen, met name die in Europa, gekozen voor appeasement.’

Op donderdag 21 mei organiseert The Rights Forum een evenement over de aanvallen op het Internationaal Strafhof en het uitblijven van een Nederlandse tegenreactie. De hoofdspreker is iemand die uit ervaring weet wat de impact is van de Amerikaanse sancties op het werk en leven van de medewerkers van het Strafhof: Fatou Bensouda, de voormalig hoofdaanklaagster van het Strafhof.

Interview | Detentie bekende Palestijnse arts Hussam Abu Safiya voor onbepaalde tijd verlengd

Een Israëlische rechtbank heeft de detentie van de bekende Palestijnse arts Hussam Abu Safiya op dinsdag voor onbepaalde tijd verlengd. Hij wordt sinds december 2024 zonder aanklacht vastgehouden. In een interview met The Rights Forum dringt Naji Abbas, directeur van de afdeling Gevangenen van Artsen voor Mensenrechten Israël, aan op internationale druk op Israël: ‘Zonder druk komen dokter Abu Safiya en andere artsen niet vrij.’

Tijdens de rechtbankzitting werd geen informatie vrijgegeven over de reden van Abu Safiya’s opsluiting. Hij wordt vastgehouden als ‘onwettig strijder’, wat oneindige detentie zonder aanklacht en zonder bewijslast mogelijk maakt. Abu Safiya’s advocaat, Ghaid Qassem, heeft geen toegang tot het dossier van zijn cliënt en mag hem niet bezoeken.

Hoewel het vertrouwen van Qassem en Abbas in het Israëlische rechtssysteem minimaal is, bewandelen ze elke mogelijke weg om te proberen Abu Safiya vrij te krijgen. Deze week dienen ze een petitie in bij het Israëlische Hooggerechtshof om de vrijlating te eisen van Abu Safiya en dertien andere artsen en paramedici die Qassem vertegenwoordigt. ‘We hebben geen vertrouwen in de uitkomst, maar we proberen al het mogelijke.’

Opinie | CDA: voorwaarden voor Palestina, vrij spel voor Israël

Het CDA stelt voorwaarden aan een erkenning van Palestina. Maar het ‘eerlijke verhaal’ van CDA-leider Bontenbal negeert de Israëlische bezetting en de gevolgen daarvan, en legt alle eisen bij de Palestijnen. Dat stelt Gerard Jonkman, directeur van The Rights Forum, in een opiniestuk.

'Op het eerste gezicht lijken de zes voorwaarden die het CDA stelt voordat zij tot de erkenning van Palestina wil overgaan voor sommigen misschien redelijk. Institutionele versterking, uitsluiting van terrorisme, erkenning van Israël, democratische hervormingen, aanpak van corruptie en religieus extremisme en, tenslotte, een VN-kader.

'Maar het ‘eerlijke verhaal’, een term die CDA-leider Bontenbal graag gebruikt, is anders. Wie de voorwaarden nader bekijkt, ziet een eenzijdig verhaal, waarin vrijwel alle eisen bij de Palestijnen worden neergelegd, terwijl de grondoorzaak – de bezetting van Palestina en de onderdrukking van de Palestijnen – buiten beeld blijft.'
